Joe Approved follows Palestinian immigrant Joseph Barbari as he independently manages and operates Belport Liquors on the corner of Belmont and Southport avenue in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. Joe and his faithful white cockatoo, Sasha run the business open to close 7 days a week. Joe and Sasha’s naturally endless exuberance attract a variety of customers, many of whom are tremendously loyal. From the regulars to the infrequent customers, Joe maintains a bright attitude each day, always joking or playfully harassing his patrons and even his 16 year old son and best friend who often help Joe with inventory and restocking the refrigerators. From behind the register, Joe keeps the store lively by always entertaining conversation, or having Sasha speak and squawk to the pleased customers. As owner of the store for over 25 years, Joe has met unfathomable diversity, shown in part by his ability to spot any counterfeit ID and his refined skills when wielding a taser or identifying a suspicious person. But for all the ill intent that Joe has dealt with, he confides that the good guys always win. Belport Liquors proves this statement true, for accomplishing the American dream is certainly a win and Joe is unquestionably one of the good guys.
